Miranda Carter is a role model to many young women in Britain as one of the only female boxing promoters. She has been a Boxing promoter for a year now and could be around for a little while yet.
With Boxing promoters Frank Warren, Mick Hennessey and Frank Maloney getting all the TV exposure. Miranda Carter is a strong determined woman going it alone.
Read her thoughts, feelings and why she does what she does.
Hi Miranda.
Thank you for your time as I know you are 4 weeks away from your next Boxing promotion.
How are preparations going for your next show?
Preparations are going really well – I’ve got some exciting and fun bouts lined up! Some may hold and some may fold - but that’s boxing. There should be 8 or 9 bouts all worth watching.
This will be your 1st anniversary as a Boxing promoter Miranda. How does that feel and what have you learned in your first year in the promotional business?
I am really pleased to have survived a year in boxing and I hope to keep going – although it is a really tough business. One thing I have learned is to listen to the audience. I always try to walk around York Hall and listen to what the crowd is saying – what they enjoy and what they want to see more of.
You had Ashley Theophane who has beaten former World Champion Demarcus Corley and former Commonwealth Champion Craig Docherty face each other in your last show. How did that feel as you have no TV and you got 2 fighters with goals of fighting for major titles to face each other?
I was pleased to promote a great fight – well matched - and the crowd really enjoyed it. Ashley won by 60-55, but Craig had come to win and the score line doesn’t reflect the hard fighting and excitement. It would have been great for it to have been on TV – it was a lot better than some of the fights that get served up on screen.
Do you think you would ever do an all-female boxing show?
No way! I put on fights that interest me and I hope will interest others. I like a good mix of styles, personalities and weights. I wouldn’t get that from an all-female show.
I have just interviewed Lesley Sackey who is current British & European amateur Champion. She was frustrated that women's boxing doesn't get much love. How do you feel about that?
I think that it’s a shame. Women’s boxing sometimes lacks the skill of male boxing but it doesn’t lack the passion. Whenever I can I will include at least one women’s bout on my bill, women boxers need the opportunities.
Have you faced obstacles because you are a female in a man's sport?
I have faced obstacles but it may be because people were suspicious of me as a newcomer rather than as a woman. I’ve also had a lot of help and support.
You seem to work with a core of the same boxers, why is that?
I try to work with people that interest me, people that inspire me, people that make me look upwards. So I like variety but I do keep coming back to boxers who fill that bill.
Why are you a Boxing promoter, you put in a lot of work with little financial gain. Why do it?
I love boxing. It is not universally popular but like many others in the sport I want to do my bit to get it more widely accepted.
Tell us what people in the Boxing business do not know about you?
Those in the business may think it weird but as a close second to boxing I love opera. It has a lot of the drama and passion of boxing… but there’s something special about boxing. Other people in the business say it’s like a drug and I guess it is.
Who is your favourite active boxer and who is your favourite all-time boxer and why?
It’s a toss up between Ashley Theophane and Tony Oakey. Ashley is a classy boxer working to make it on his own terms – respect to him on both counts. Tony Oakey has seen good times and bad times but he always gives it his best shot – grit and determination every time. My favourite all-time boxer has to be Steve Collins. No fear and he always came forward.
If you could promote any boxer who would it be? past or present!
Ruslan Chagaev – tough, focused and clever!
I would like to finish off Miranda, but first tell us why we should come down to York Hall in Bethnal Green, London to watch your Boxing show on Sunday 21st June?
You should come down because you will have a great value for money afternoon. You will see classy boxers like Ashley Theophane, explosive boxers like Leon Williams, fight to the death fighters like Juliette Winter and warriors like Matt Jack. You will see heavyweights, Franklin Egobi, new boys on the block Scott Douglas and John Wayne Hibbert, and great entertainers, Lee Cook and Charlie Collins. Come down to York Hall – home of British Boxing - have a drink, some great entertainment – oh, and bring your dad if he’s around – its Father’s Day!
