Campillo files appeal
Former WBA light heavyweight champion Gabriel Campillo has filed an appeal Friday morning with the WBA – including all of the necessary documents and fees – to contest the split decision rendered January 29th during his title fight with Beibut Shumenov. Shumenov won a controversial split decision which was widely criticized by ringside observers and the television commentators. The WBA was also critical of the selections of the judges because the sanctioning body had recommended several judges but the Nevada State Athletic commission utilized only one of the judges referred by the WBA. The NSAC-appointed judges Patricia Jarman and Jerry Roth respectively scored the bout at 117-111 and 115-113 in favor of Shumenov while the judge suggested by the WBA – Levi Martínez – had Campillo ahead at 117-111.
